The 3,000 Mile Oil Change is a Myth of the Past

Most people grew up with certain rules that were told to them by parents and other knowledgeable people about automobile maintenance. One of those rules was that you should change the engine oil of your car every 3,000 miles. While that used to be the case, it is not necessarily true today.

The reason is that better oil today and more efficient engines make it possible to go much longer with oil changes. A good rule of thumb is that you can go as long as 7,500 miles between oil changes. If you still have doubts as to when the best time to change the oil might be, use the manual method. Just pull the dipstick and rub a bit of oil between two fingers. If it is gritty, then it is time to change it. If it is still smooth, you can wait a while.

It is nice to know that you have a longer time between oil changes because it is less expensive and less trouble. If you’re still unsure about your vehicle’s needs, be sure to stop in and get started with the mechanics at Diffee Lincoln!
